Online Dating: Conversation Starter Ideas

Are you tongue tied when you meet a new person? Do those silent awkward moments make you want to quickly say goodbye and flee? Do you get anxiety because you don’t know what to say or are worried you’ll come across as uninteresting? Then this post is for you!

When starting a conversation on an online dating platform, it’s important to be genuine and show interest in the other person. Here are some conversation starters you can use:

  1. Ask About Their Interests:
“I noticed you’re into [specific interest]. What got you interested in that?” or “I see you enjoy [activity]. How did you get started with that?” or “I see you love travelling..what countries have you been to?” etc
  2. Compliment them:
Look through their profile and find good things to compliment them on. “Your profile caught my eye, especially [specific detail]. It’s really impressive/attractive!” or “I couldn’t help but notice your smile in your pictures. It’s lovely!”.
  3. Ask About Their Day:
“How has your day been so far? Anything exciting or interesting happen?” or  “What’s something that made you smile today?”
  4. Share a Fun Fact:
Share something interesting that is related to their profile/interests or maybe some info on a currently trending event. “Did you know [interesting fact]? I found it fascinating and just thought you might too!” or “I recently learned [something interesting]. Have you ever come across that before?” or “What’s your take on [trending topic]?”
  5. Discuss Shared Interests:
“I noticed we both love [specific interest]. What’s your favorite [related thing]?” or I’m a big fan of [shared interest]. Do you have a favorite [related item]?”
  6. Travel-related Questions:
“If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?” or “I love exploring new places. What’s your favorite travel destination so far?”
  7. Food and Dining:
“I’m a bit of a foodie. Do you have a favorite type of cuisine or a go-to comfort meal?” or  “I recently tried [new dish]. Have you had any interesting culinary experiences lately?”
  8. Movies/TV Shows:
“What movie genre do you watch?” or “I’m a movie buff. Any favorite movies or TV shows you’d recommend?” or “If you had to pick one movie to watch on repeat for a week, what would it be?”
  9. Books:
“I love reading. What’s the last great book you read?” or “Are you into fiction or non-fiction? Any favorite authors?” Make are actually interested in reading first. A lot of people are not these days.
  10. Future Plans:
“What’s something you’re really looking forward to in the next few months?” or “If you could accomplish one big goal this year, what would it be?”

Remember to tailor your conversation starter to something specific in the person’s profile to show that you’ve taken the time to read it. Also, be respectful and open, and try to keep the conversation light and enjoyable. Avoid being critical or judgemental. Keep in mind that if you can’t be soulmates, you can still be friends. Many people have made some good friends from online dating, in their quest to find life partners.
